Braiding black girls’ hair is not just a hairstyle, it is a cultural symbol that has been an integral part of the black community for generations. Braiding has been used for centuries as a protective style for black hair, which can be both fragile and prone to damage. It’s a way for black women and girls to maintain their hair’s health and beauty while also expressing their identity. Braiding is not just about hair, it’s also about the bond it creates between the braider and the person whose hair is being braided.
Whether it’s mothers braiding their daughters’ hair or friends braiding each other’s hair, it brings people together. It’s a time for conversation, laughter, and bonding. My granddaughter, like many other black girls, has her hair braided. It’s a tradition that has been passed down through generations in my family, and it’s important that we continue to teach our children about the significance of this cultural practice. Braiding is a way for black girls to embrace their heritage, and it’s a tradition that should be celebrated and cherished.
My granddaughter Princess Kali Richards has some of the most beautiful braids I have ever seen. Her hair is thick and long, making it perfect for all sorts of styles and updos. But her go-to look is always braids, which she has mastered with grace and elegance. Watching her braid her own hair is like watching an artist at work, carefully weaving and twisting each strand to create intricate patterns and designs. It’s amazing to see how she is able to turn her hair into a work of art, and I am always in awe of her talent.
Her braids are not only beautiful but also functional. They keep her hair neat and out of her face, allowing her to focus on her studies and other activities. They are also practical for sports and outdoor activities, as they are easy to maintain and don’t require constant touch-ups. But beyond their practicality, her braids are a reflection of her personality and style. Each braid is unique, and she always finds ways to incorporate different colors and textures into her designs. I am so proud of my granddaughter and her amazing braiding skills.
