#BWV #BEBRAVE is reaching out to you today to discuss a topic that I believe requires urgent attention and action. After extensive research and analysis, I have selected my dissertation topic to be “Overcoming Barriers to Leadership Equality in the Black Church.” I believe it is essential to address the issue of abuse within our church community, regardless of whether it is something we like to acknowledge or openly discuss.
In the words of Audrey Lourdes, “Your silence won’t protect you,” and this statement holds true, especially when it comes to the church. Throughout my six years of research, I have discovered that the church has become a hiding place for people to conceal their secrets, particularly cases of abuse. It has been disheartening to witness the damage, tears, and fear experienced by those who have shared their stories of abuse with me, especially among black women.
Many individuals have expressed their fear of being ruined, facing retaliation, or being unable to utilize their gifts if they were to speak out. Consequently, they have chosen to wear their silence like a shroud, imprisoning themselves in shame. This is where BWV (Black Women’s Voices) comes into play. Our organization is dedicated to creating a safe space for women to share their stories, helping them to remove their shrouds of shame.
Abuse within the church manifests in various ways, including verbal, physical, mental, and spiritual, leading to even the misinterpretation of scriptures to normalize such behavior.
